Girls Academy Instructors  The Sportsplex Girls Academy is proud to have some of the most experienced, girls program logo 3passionate and dedicated instructors available for your athlete.  Our instructors have been teaching and educating athletes their entire lives and have a tremendous passion for both athletic development and the individual growth.  This list of instructors may change frequently as we continue to add knowledge and depth to our already tremendous list of individuals.

Basketball

  • Glenn Phillips Basketball Instructor/Contact – gphillips@sportsplexwest.com
    • Currently:
      • Director – Iowa Battlers Basketball Club
    • Previous:
      • All-State and All conference basketball and football –  North High Graduate in 1995
      • Played basketball at St. Catharine College in Kentucky Alderson Broaddus College in West Virginia
      • Received his Bachelors degree in Leadership in May of 2000.
      • Led his team in scoring and rebounding his senior year. Averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds.
    • About Glenn:
      • Glenn started the Iowa Battlers program in 2011 after coaching for youth for years.  He has a passion for development and fundamentals and has shown a tremendous ability to teach the game to young athletes.  Glen has brought his extensive knowledge of the game to the Girls Academy.

Lacrosse

    • Previously
      • Playing Experience – Started playing in Mid-1980’s
      • Playing Experience – Played for Iowa State Cyclones Club LAX
      • Coaching Experience – Level 2 Certified through US LAX
      • Multiple Seasons JV Head Coach and Varsity Asst. Coach  at WDM LAX
    • About Chad:
      • Chad brings a passion and commitment to this relatively new sport in Iowa.  His outstanding organizational and leadership skills will help your athlete learn one of the fastest growing sports in the country.  If you are looking for a new sport or wanting to increase your level of play at LAX, Coach Thompson will help you achieve your goals.

Softball

      • Softball Coordinator for Sportsplex West
      • Business Owner – MG Masonry
    • Previously
      • Attended Indianola HS
      • Played Collegiate at Creighton University (Freshman year-2011) starting 32 of 43 games as a Freshman
      • Transferred to University of Iowa and was a utility player (Sophomore and Junior year)
      • Finished Career at William Penn University – named All Conference, Deans List, Presidents List and graduated with a Degree in Sports Administration.
      • Former Head Coach – Twin Cedars HS, PCM HS, and numerous softball club team program.
      • Former Asst. Coach – William Penn University (2015), Knoxville HS
    • About Malloree:
      • Malloree  has seen softball from almost every angle possible – HS player, small college player, Division 1 player, HS coach, and college coach.  She brings a tremendous amount of talent, knowledge and ambition to the Girls Academy.  Her background and passion for the game will provide a tremendous opportunity for your athlete to develop.
  • Brittanee Grove – Softball Instructor
    • Currently
      • Entering first year as North HS Head Coach
      • 4th Grade Teacher
    • Previously
      • Attended Indianola HS
      • Played Collegiately at Creighton University – starting 29 games as a Freshman
      • Transferred to University of Iowa (Sophomore and Junior Year) – injured and redshirted Jr. Year
      • Finished career at William Penn University – earning 1st Team NAIA All American honors and tying the school record for home runs at 17.  In addition was named the Conference Player of the Year.
      • Former Asst. Coach: Twin Cedars HS, Pleasantville HS – Numerous lessons, camps and clinics
    • About Brittanee:
      • Britanee  has been involved in softball her entire life and has a unique perspective of being a two-way player – pitcher and infielder –  all the way to college.  Her all-around abilities led her to extremely high levels of play and multiple opportunities to use those talents.  The knowledge and expertise Britannee possesses will be a tremendous asset to all of the softball players in the area.
  • Steviee Grove – Softball Instructor
    • Currently:
      • Catching instructor and volunteer coach
      • 3rd year law Student @ Drake University
    • Previously:
      • Attended Indianola HS – Selected as Adidas Future All-Star (Catcher)
      • Played collegiately at Division 1 Indiana State – playing in 20 games/starting 16
      • Transferred to University of Iowa – Academic all Big 10 2013
      • Finished career at William Penn starting all 56 games her senior year.  Member of the Deans List and Presidents List
    • About Steviee:
      • Steviee, has been a part many different sides of softball over her long, successful career.  Steviee’s knowledge and expertise in hitting and catching propelled her to being recruited by Division 1 Indiana State after posting a registered 1.62 pop time in college.  She is an example of how hard work and dedication can result in achieving great things.  She will use that knowledge and expertise to help your player develop in all aspects of softball

      • Softball Instructor for 20+ years
      • Business Owner
    • Previously
      • Father of 4 collegiate athletes – 3 softball and 1 baseball
      • Father played in Chicago Cubs organization
      • Former Motocross professional
      • Personal coach for numerous collegiate softball players
    • About Gary
      • Gary has been coaching for over 20 years at the youth and HS age level.  He has learned the game from multiple HS, Collegiate and professional coaches, especially in the area of hitting. He loves teaching the game of softball, encouraging kids at all ends of the spectrum and will continue to give back to the wonderful sport.
  • Kelsey Kingery – Softball Instructor

      • Softball Instructor
      • Graphic Designer
    • Previously
      • Attended Knoxville HS – 5 Year Starter
      • Played collegiately at Southwest Minnesota State University – appearing in 28 games Freshman year
      • Transferred to UNI after her Sophomore year – graduated with a degree in graphic design
    • About Kelsey:
      • Kelsey was a tremendously versatile player on her road to college.  Playing both infield and outfield helped her attract the attention of outstanding colleges.  The Girls Academy is excited to have her expertise.
  • Mike Mahoney – Softball Instructor
    • Currently:
      • Partner – Sportsplex West
    • Previously
      • Attended Dowling HS
      • Played college baseball at Creighton University (Catcher)
      • Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1995
      • Played professionally 1995-2007 for Atlanta, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis and Toronto
      • Played MLB for Chicago 2000, 2002 and St. Louis 2005
      • Coached AAA Iowa Cubs – 2007
    • About Mike:
      • Mike brings nearly two decades of experience of baseball and sports development to the Girls Academy.  Mike has been involved in the instruction and development of numerous athletes and as a father of 3 sports minded girls, he knows the need for a high level female-centered athletic program like the Girls Academy.
  • Evan Romanchuk – Softball Instructor
    • Currently:
      • Lead Hitting Instructor – Sportsplex West
      • Baseball/Softball Camps Director – Sportsplex West
      • Asst Director – Iowa Sticks HS Baseball Program
    • Previously
      • Grew up in Vancouver, BC – Canada
      • Played baseball at Santa Rosa College – California
      • Played baseball at Southwesten CC – Creston, IA
      • Played baseball at San Francisco State – California
      • Part of the Great Britain National Team – played in World Baseball Cup – 2009
    • About Evan:
      • Evan is one of the most sought after hitting instructors in the Midwest.  He has a tremendous knowledge of baseball and softball hitting fundamentals, with an emphasis on power.  He has had great results increasing bat speed and power for young athletes, and will a tremendous asset to the Girls Academy.

Volleyball
