Return To Play Guidance

This guidance was created after review of the Iowa Department of Education Covid-19 Reopening Guidance for Summer Sports guidelines found at this link. This is to be used as a resource for families, teams, spectators, officials and coaches to determine when and how teams may begin to engage in team play while keeping participants and spectators safe. It must be used in conjunction with all proclamations issued by the governor and guidance provided by the IDPH.

Practices

  • Post signage prominently indicating no one should attend or participate in practice if they currently have symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in the last 14 days.
  • No dugouts may be used. Players’ items should be lined up against the fence at least six feet apart.
  • Parents must remain in their cars or drop off and pick up players after practice.
  • Players should use their own gloves, helmets, and bats as much as possible.
  • Coaches are responsible for ensuring social distancing is maintained between players as much as possible. This means additional spacing between players while playing catch, changing drills so that players remain spaced out, and no congregating of players while waiting to bat. Players should use hand sanitizer after playing catch.
  • Players must bring their own water/beverage to consume during and after practice. No shared drinking fountains, portable hydration stations, or coolers may be used.
  • Coaches must sanitize shared equipment before and after each practice.
  • Players and coaches should check their temperatures at home before attending practices.
  • Anyone with symptoms of illness is not allowed to practice.
  • Coaches should be knowledgeable of their students with pre-existing health conditions and work with school nurses or other health officials to take additional precautions as needed.
  • Players should be encouraged to provide their own hand sanitizer.
  • Coaches must ban the spitting of sunflower seed shells.
  • Coaches are responsible for tracking absences for the purpose of noting potential COVID-19 cases.
  • Contact public health if a positive case of COVID-19 is reported.

Game Play

  • Post signage prominently indicating no one should attend or participate in games if they currently have symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in the last 14 days.
  • Use of dugouts is permitted during games only.
  • Players should use their own gloves, helmets, and bats as much as possible.
  • Players must bring their own water/beverage to consume during and after games. No shared drinking fountains, water stations, or coolers may be used.
  • Coaches must sanitize shared equipment before and after each game.
  • Players and coaches should check their temperatures at home before attending practices or games.
  • Anyone with symptoms of illness is not allowed to participate.
  • No use of bleachers for fans. Encourage fans to bring their own chairs or stand. Fans should practice social distancing between different household units and accept personal responsibility for public health guidelines.
  • Teams must also implement any other reasonable measures under the circumstances of each school to ensure social distancing of staff, students, and community members, increased hygiene practices, and other public health measures to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 consistent with guidance issued by the IDPH.
  • Fans must not attend if they have symptoms of illness.
  • Only ONE umpire will be used per game. The umpire will be placed behind the pitching mound at least 6 feet from all players. The umpire will not touch any baseballs.
  • Each teams is responsible for baseballs used in the field. There is no sharing of baseballs between teams and a member of the coaching staff is responsible for keeping it’s team supplied (foul balls) during game play.
  • Contact public health if a positive case of COVID-19 is reported.

This guidance should be viewed as advisory unless it’s specifically authorized by state statute, according to Iowa Code section 256.9A. This does not apply to City and State rules, declaratory orders, or materials required by federal law or courts.

SportsPlex West Community,

Again, we certainly hope you and your family are in a safe and healthy situation and we are looking forward to when we can all get together again! As promised, we will keep the health and safety of our community and our staff at the forefront of our policies and procedures. We have been in contact with the Iowa Department of Public Health and will continue to provide safe return to play policies under the leadership of the IDPH.

Until April 30th we will continue to practice Social Distancing as advised by the CDC and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Our staff has been working tirelessly over the last 4 weeks delivering content, using online delivery systems and finding ways for clients to continue education in their respective athletic endeavors. Education and learning continue to be our main focus. Additionally we are committed to being available to you and your children remotely.

As you know very well, Sportsplex West has a wide array of opportunities for athletes. Programming casts a broad net over multiple disciplines. Fortunately, each and every discipline has wonderful leadership that tirelessly creates learning opportunities in their respective field of expertise. We currently have programming and events at various levels of completion. These leaders have spent the last 4 weeks developing policies and procedures to provide safe, best practice policies for clients during this time.

Programming plans updated as of April 15th:

Baseball Leagues: Continue suspended until an announcement made on May 1st. The announcement on or around May 1st will provide the next stage of planning for league play. Many options are under review and as always we will use the recommendations of State and Local Government and more importantly the Iowa Department of Public Health. League planning is based on the following.

  • PBL – Closely watching IAHSAA. If High Schools push back, cancel or suspend, the PBL will be following healthy play guidelines and start as soon as it is safe. The entirety of the summer calendar is a possibility for games.
  • CBL and OBL – Following future healthy play guidelines as recommended by the IDPH, this league has the flexibility to start as early as May 11th or as late as mid-July depending on guidelines and safe play initiatives. We look to have more healthy play guidelines prior to our May 1st update.
  • Instructional T-Ball – Following future healthy play guidelines as recommended by the IDPH, this league has the flexibility to start as early as early May or as late as mid-September depending on guidelines and safe play initiatives. We look to have more healthy play guidelines prior to our May 1st update. Contact: Blake Marchant bmarchant@sportsplewest.com

Private lessons: In a tremendous effort by the staff to keep athletes engaged, busy and creating a habit of lifelong learning, online delivery is going great! In the last 4 weeks staff have conducted an INCREDIBLE amount of online lessons. Clients are taking advantage of online LIVE conferencing in replacement of face to face sessions. As an added online learning opportunity, clients will now be provided personalized daily and weekly assignments. Hopefully as recommendations from the IDPH continue to be made, a move to having face to face lessons will be a possibility in May. Purchasing, booking, and editing of sessions remain the same through the self-service portal. Contact: Evan Romanchuk eromanchuk@sportsplexwest.com

Iowa PowerPlex Volleyball: Directors continue to work on options to reconcile unfinished seasons. Coaches are in contact with their teams. Teams continue to attend online practices/enhancements and complete daily and weekly assignments though “Plex Stream”. We are in close contact with sanctioning bodies pertaining to tournaments. Many tournaments have been rescheduled to later dates. As we learn more, we will continue to pass the information on to you. Contact: directors@iowapowerplex.com

Update on Corona Virus SportsPlex Family,

There is no higher priority to us than the safety and health of our customers. We are actively and closely monitoring the spread of the Coronavirus, and we are working hard to stay on top of this evolving situation.

As you are likely aware, the world health community continues to monitor closely the emergence of the virus named “coronavirus disease 2019” (COVID-19).  The health, safety and well-being of our community is always top of mind.  We know many of you may have concerns with the recent outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus.  We hope this information will help address those concerns.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) currently rates the health risk of COVID-19 as low to the general public in North America.  Clients who wish not to attend Sportsplex sponsored events or training are encouraged to contact the director of your respective program.  We encourage anyone who is sick or has a cough, fever, or other symptoms to stay home and not to attend practices or events.

We recognize this is an emerging and rapidly evolving situation.  Therefore, Sportsplex is continuing to take proactive measures to support the health and welfare of customers, employees and the community, including increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting bathrooms, door handles, equipment, balls and other surfaces and providing disinfectant wipes and gels both at our facilities, and to teams and coaches traveling.

If, and when, the CDC, Iowa Department of Health, or local school districts provide updated guidance, we will take appropriate action and communicate those plans via our website and through any other relevant communication channels.

Over the weeks and months, we will do our utmost to keep you informed while mitigating the impact on our services.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

The CDC recommends taking the following preventative actions to lessen the spread of viruses include:

  • Stay home if you or a family member is sick.
  • Cover your mouth with your upper arm or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
